Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

This is the first version of the .NET Framework to be included as part of the Windows operating system. Major introductory features of this framework are Built-in support for mobile ASP.Net controls, Security updations, Built-in support for ODBC and Oracle databases, .NET Compact Framework - a version of the .NET Framework for small devices, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) support etc.

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Next major updates to the .net programming are because of this framework release.

Major changes are new hosting API for native applications, Full 64-bit support for both the x64 and the IA64 hardware platforms, Language support for generics built directly into the .NET CLR, Many additional and improved ASP.NET web controls.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5

As with .NET Framework 3.0, version 3.5 uses the CLR of version 2.0. In addition, it installs .NET Framework 2.0 SP1, .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 (with 3.5 SP1) and .NET Framework 3.0 SP1, which adds some methods and properties to the BCL classes in version 2.0 which are required for version 3.5 features such as Language Integrated Query (LINQ). These changes do not affect applications written for version 2.0, however.

As with previous versions, a new .NET Compact Framework 3.5 was released in tandem with this update in order to provide support for additional features on Windows Mobile and Windows Embedded CE devices.Some of the updates are Adds support for expression trees and lambda methods, Extension methods & trees to represent high-level source code at runtime, Language Integrated Query (LINQ) along with its various providers, ADO.NET synchronization API, Asynchronous network I/O API, Support for HTTP pipelining and syndication feeds etc.

ASP.NET

A Microsoft server-side Web technology. ASP.NET Software Development takes an object-oriented programming approach to Web page execution. Every element in an ASP.NET Application Development page is treated as an object and run on the server. An ASP.NET page gets compiled into an intermediate language by a .NET Common Language Runtime-compliant compiler.

Since the code is run straight from the processor, pages load much faster than classic ASP pages, where embedded VBScript or JScript had to be continuously interpreted and cached with the use of ASP.NET web application framework programmers can use to build dynamic web sites, web applications & web parts etc.

DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke is an open source [4] web application framework [5] written in VB.NET for the ASP.NET framework. The application's content management system is extensible and customizable through the use of skins and modules, and it can be used to create, deploy, and manage intranet, extranet, and web sites. DotNetNuke has a basic core which can be extended using pluggable modules and providers that enable additional functionality; the look and feel of individual sites can be customized using skins.

Windows Mobile Applications

Microsoft provides environment to develop managed & native code applications using Visual Studio 2005 and .NET Compact Framework MS's windows CE is compact edition of windows OS and that is mainly used in the Handheld device called mobile computer. It has limited features then Windows OS but It operates on different types of devices like, barcode scanner, techlogix barcode scanner etc.

Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices which run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones and Barcode devices. Originally appearing as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system, Windows Mobile has been updated several times, with the current version being Windows Mobile 6.0 and a new release scheduled for 2008.
